The smoothness and refinement of a Saint-Estèphe Second Classified GrowthThe property

Owned by the brothers Martin and Olivier Bouygues since 2006, Château Montrose is an emblematic reference among the great wines of Saint-Estèphe. This Second Cru Classé in 1855 watches over one of the most beautiful terroirs of the Médoc. In the past as today, Château Montrose has distinguished itself for the quality of its wines, its style and its distinction which make the property an essential and world-famous estate throughout the world.

The vineyard

Located on an exceptional location considered one of the greatest terroirs in the Bordeaux region, the Château Montrose vineyard covers 95 hectares of vines. This vast vineyard in one piece is a rarity on a terroir considered an “elite core”. Located not far from the Gironde estuary, the Château Montrose vineyard is planted on terraces of gravel mixed with sand on the surface, while the subsoil is clayey in nature.

The vintage

A relatively mild winter precedes a very rainy spring. Thanks to the role of thermal regulator played by the Gironde estuary, the episodes of frost recorded at the end of April do not impact the vineyard. The strong summer heat forces the vines to draw on the water reserves built up thanks to the spring rains. Hot and sunny, the month of September was punctuated by rains which boosted ripening. Hot days alternate with cool nights, ideal conditions to preserve the balance between freshness and aromatic power. The harvest is carried out under ideal conditions from September 23 to October 14.
