Marsannay

The wines from the northern hillside of Marsannay have an excellent reputation. The brown calcareous soils, very suitable for viticulture, give the most solid and structured wines. Very tannic, they will be fully appreciated as they age, their fruitiness (cherry and plum aromas) being discreet in their youth. The Marsannay combe is in fact made up of two combes, the Pré combe and the more imposing Grandvau combe with, in their centre, an alluvial cone with deeper and rather brown limestone soils. Different climates offer varied wines, in particular thanks to the variation in the speed of maturation of the grapes. Where temperatures are coldest, wines can be enjoyed younger. They quickly show suppleness and elegance, and are marked by fruit very early on. On the southern hillside of Marsannay, the climates are also numerous and the vines are mainly planted on shallow soils, clay and silt. It is advisable to keep only the best vintages, because young, these wines have a great interest to be tasted on their fruit. Finally, on the slopes of Couchey, brown limestone soils alternate with rendzines on gravel, to give finer wines, with aromas of raspberry, with notes of plum and cherry stone.
